Rocky Lockridge (43-5, 35 KOs)
vs. Tony "The Tiger" Lopez (29-1, 22 KOs)
The Ring Magazine 1988 "Fight of the Year"
July 23, 1988, Arco Arena, Sacramento, Calif.
Tony "The Tiger" Lopez, Sacramento's hometown hero, was getting his first title shot in front of a rabid, friendly crowd, and simultaneously was stepping way up in class to face the battle-tested Lockridge, who didn't have a soft loss on his record. The blemishes on his record had come compliments of Eusebio Pedroza (twice), Juan LaPorte, Wilfredo Gomez and Julio Cesar Chavez. The latter two losses were by majority decision, and the first Pedroza fight was a split decision. Conventional knowledge said Tony Lopez -- whose only serious victory had come four months earlier over 18-2 Tony Pep -- probably was in way over his head.
