Michael Nunn (36-0, 24 KOs)

vs. James Toney (25-0-1, 18 KOs)

May 10, 1991, John O'Donnell Stadium, Davenport, Iowa

After back-to-back conquests of Frank Tate, Juan Roldan, Sumbu Kalambay, Iran Barkley, Marlon Starling and Iran Barkley, IBF champ Michael "Second to" Nunn, 36-0, stood at the top of the middleweight stack and was regarded by many boxing experts as the No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The undefeated James Toney, meanwhile, was the IBC middleweight king, a title he had taken from previously unbeaten Merqui Sosa earlier in the year. This one had all the harbingers of a classic.
