 Mayorga, 34 years old, a former world champion at light middleweight, bet $1 million on himself in Las Vegas, fully believing he would knock out the 30-year-old Vargas, an ex-world champ himself in the same weight division. This battle took place at 164 pounds.

 The pre-fight press conferences and weigh-in were among the most volatile of all time, and the fight, as expected, was violent.
