Griffith was a New York fighter, originally form the U.S. Virgin Islands, and one of the greatest pure boxers of all time. He was a six-time world champion, from welterweight to middleweight, in an era preceding the alpha-bet soup rankings. He compiled a record of 85-24-2, (23 KOs) between 1963-1977, with wins over Luis Rodriguez, Dick Tiger and Nino Benvenuti in world title fights. His legacy also includes an ill-fated win over then-welterweight king Benny "Kid" Paret, a bout that resulted in Paret's death. Griffith announced in recent years that he is gay.
