DE LA HOYA, DRUGS,
INFIDELITY
AND SOLUTION By Reni M. Valenzuela Why do people have to be
saddened about it?
Oscar De La Hoya checking
himself into a rehab for substance abuse which addiction began with
marital infidelity is a step in the right direction.
Such is a very positive news and a reason to
be joyful about especially for his family and loved ones, including his
followers and fans.
It is not as simple as it may
seem for any high-profile personality to voluntarily enter a rehab
institution and announce it to the public. There must have been some
light from above that struck De La Hoya similar to that which spotted
upon Saul of Tarsus on his way to De La Hoya confessed: "After doing an honest
evaluation of myself, I recognize that there are certain issues that I
need to work on. Like everyone, I have my flaws, and I do not want to be
one of those people that is afraid to admit and address those flaws.” Golden Boy is right on track! The truly sad and lamentable
condition is the “hidden plight” that persists among
athletes
in every sport nowadays.
Athletes
who
are hooked into drugs, alcohol and other forms of vices which
effectively get in the way of their success as viable players in their
chosen field of competition.
And, worse, they are deep into “high”
pleasures blind-folded to the havoc it would cause not only upon their
career as sportsmen but also on their personal lives. De La Hoya’s story is that of a
pagan coming to terms with the reality of his godlessness and utter
helplessness before a forgiving God and a loving Father seated in the
Throne Room of Grace.
The Good Book shows us how indescribable
“partying” occur in Heaven and how hosts of angels up in the King’s
majesty rejoice over one sinner who comes home to repent in contrast to
those who have been taken captive in the dungeon of everlasting darkness
and trapped in the evil devices cleverly set up
by
the god of this world for those who refuse to believe.
And, worse, they think they need no Savior. But far more than rehabilitation
and reformation, De La Hoya needs transformation.
The same Resurrection power that changed
Saul into a great Apostle Paul and unshackled a Reni Valenzuela from
numerous vices and indulgences of the youth way back then as a young
man, is the same unchanging power that can save and transform an Oscar
De La Hoya and the rest of the world into becoming celestial wonders and
earth’s new creations.

Pacquiao wins, but Arum wins big Reni’s interest in
boxing dates back during his elementary and high school days
when he would
be asked to compete in
boxing matches especially during community fiesta celebrations
representing the place in Manila where he grew up. He fought in
boxing competitions probably the same number of times that he
joined in singing contests also during fiestas of the same
period.
Reni took part in different
songwriting festivals
but it was his God-given talent in
drawing and painting that made him win the grand prize. A graduate of
Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, he has been into
different business ventures and currently owns and manages a
herbal production and trade company. Reni is a resource speaker
in different Christian mission gatherings and forums. He travels
to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ in various congregations.
He is into other sports
interests like basketball, table tennis and swimming.
Reni loves writing. But his
one most consuming passion
is the Word of God.
